The Accelerated Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently or with a buddy, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year. It's a very effective program.
Our Goal
Every book that the second graders will be reading will be worth 0.5 points. Our goal will be for every student in our class to reach 1.5 points by the end of the month. This means that your child will have to read at the MINIMUM 3 books per month, this is assuming they score 100% on each of their tests. Since we only have library once a week, if your child needs an additional AR book or two, they are more than welcome to check one out from our classroom library.
The reward
How it works
1) Your child will check out an AR (accelerated reader) book from either the library or my classroom.
2) The students have been asked to read the book a MINIMUM of 3 times.
3) After they feel like they have a firm grasp on the story, they can come to me so I can set up their test on the computer
4) They'll take their test
5) They'll receive their test score
6) If the student reaches their goal, they'll be rewarded with a special prize.
